Clematis Offer

We are currently running a Clematis offer that shall run now until Spring. We are offering all our Clematis at half price. We have already had a massive uptake on the offer and reserves have come in. So we do advise if you require any Clematis to at least put a reserve in asap to avoid disappointment.

Tree Potting Completed

The Nursery have now completed their final Tree potting programme. This stock will be available from September 2010.
We are currentely running a promotion on Trees that are in the £14.50-£16.00 price bracket that are now just £10.00 each.

Specimen Rootballs and Whips

It has now become that time of year when planting is essential for next year, so we are getting in first in letting you know that rootball specimens and whips will soon be available, if you wish to get your hands on the best of the stock then you are more then welcome to contact the office with your advance orders.

On other news Debbie has had her baby, if you didn't know already, they are both doing well. Orders are still coming in as our shrubs are getting snapped up, also our range of Heucheras are looking superb along with our Phormiums and Cordylines if you fancy something a bit different.

Berberis thunbergii Starburst

Well what a weekend it was for weather, with Saturday a scorcher and yet more sunshine for Sunday.

The big plant sale went well with lots of happy bargain hunters going away with full trolleys and even bigger smiles. We now look forward to the next few weeks as our shrubs come in to their own with wonderful autumn colours on there way, along with our wide range of grasses which are now looking fabulous!

So hope to hear from you soon with those shrubs and grass orders.

If you don't already know, this coming Friday 7th August (gosh! it's August already) is our Big Plant Day Sale. We will be opening our doors to the public so you can grab some of our lovely range of stock at just a fraction of the price. Bargain!

We will be open from 9am til 3pm, but hurry if you want to get your hands on the best goodies.

Fresh New Specimens

We've just recieved delivery of some fresh new large specimens. Amongst the order is some red leaved Cordylines (Red Star and Atropurpurea) in an 18L pot, standard Olives, Photinias and Trachelospermums which make great feature plants and a selection of 2 metre plus everegreen specimens.

Euphorbias

We have a great range of Euphorbias coming on line this week and a couple of varieties that are new to us this year.

Pictured here is Euphorbia Efanthia. This is a fully hardy perennial with small, green leaves with purple tinges on the edges and red undersides. It produces yellow balls of flower from June to September. Plant in moist but fertile, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. H: 30cm S:25cm.

Also looking great this week is Euphorbia Red Wings ~ an evergreen perennial that is very free flowering and Euphorbia Whistleberry Garnet which has beautiful red winter buds.

Please be aware that Euphorbias can irritate the skin and can be harmful if ingested.

Clematis

We have plenty of Clematis on the nursery all blooming in to flower at the moment. The early flowering Clematis montana are just going over but plenty of the hydrids are in flower to continue the run of colour. Looking particularly good at the moment are Mrs N Thompson (pictured) Daniel Deronda, The President and Marie Boisselot.
Clematis are divided into pruning groups in order to determine how to get the best from them. This is also a good guide to flowering times and choosing a different variety from each group will ensure you have year round colour from these beautiful climbers.

Fresh New Ferns

We have a gorgeous fresh new range of ferns that have just rooted and are whizzing out the door. A mix of evergreen and deciduous varieties offer something for any shady spot in the garden. I relly like the prehistoric look of ferns and I think they bring something special to both modern and traditional gardens. My personal favourite is the Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium nipponicum Pictum) It has striking silver fronds with a deep red mid-rib - a real eye catcher.

Specimen Heucheras

We have growna range of 7.5L Heucheras for the first time this year and they have just rooted and are ready for sale. These are excellent plants for a shady border but are also happy in a bit of sunshine.
Varieties include Blackbird, Caramel, Marmalade, Obsidian, Prince and Silver Scrolls.
Heucheras are fully hardy perennials that are happiest in moist but fertile, well-drained soil.
Their most striking feature is the coloured foliage ranging from deep purples to lime greens, many varieties with eye-catching coloured veins in the leaves. Heucheras produce small flowers in May & June, often white in colour.

Plant of the Week

I just wanted to write a quick note about Ligularia przewalskii.

These are looking particularly good on the nursery. This is a fully hardy clump forming perennial with deep cut, large palmate leaves. In late summer it produces dark stemmed spikes of yellow flower heads. Plant in moderately fertile, deep, reliably moist soil in full sun with some midday shade. H:2m. S:1m.

A real gem!!

Cash & Carry Stock

We now have lots of fresh new stock on the Cash & Carry. We have recieved deliveries from various suppliers and now after the long winter months we can offer you a great selection of specimens and palms. Pictured here are some 7.5L Cordylines in a variety of colours, these have been very popular.

We have also had some fresh new Photinia x fras. Red Robin in various sizes as well as some colourful Nandinas and lush green Mahonias.

As well as all the new specimens we have a huge range of shrubs and perennials in 2/3L pots available to all our customers.

Please make a visit to the nursery if you can, the beds are bursting with gorgeous stock just waiting for a new home!!

Perennials

We have just finished potting a huge batch of perennials for early spring sales next year. They are all in a tunnel with a heater so growth should be steady throughout the winter months. Pictured is Geranium Melinda. It's so pretty, I couldn't resist blogging it!! Many of the new varieties are in the catalogue however, we have a few that we have acquired since the catalogue was printed so keep your eyes peeled for the availability list in the spring!

Autumn Interest

We've just recieved delivery of a selection of plants that are ideal for autumn interest. Pictured are Gaultheria procumbens in a 1.5L, these have beautiful red berries at this time of year that really catch the eye. We also have a great selection of Cornus which are faithful old favourites for the autumn. Varieties include Flaviramea, Midwinter Fire, Elegantissima, alba, Sibirica and Kesselringii.
The last little gem i'd like to draw your attention to is the Skimmia jap. Rubella. These plants are in a 2L pot and have lush evergreen foliage with bright pink flower buds at this time of year.

£10 Trees

October is an ideal time to plant trees, the soil is still warm enough to encourage root growth and give trees time to settle in before the winter weather kicks in.

We now have a list of trees available to ou trade customers at £10.00 plus VAT as well as some older stock that is only £5. Most of these trees are excellent quality and have been reduced simply to make space on the nursery. They have all been potted for at least 3 years and are therefore well established and strong plants.

We also have the new trees coming on line if you are looking for a smaller, fresher addition to a planting plan.

National Conifer Week

The HTA and the British Conifer Growers Association have announced National Conifer week for 27th September -5th October 2008.

Malus

As the first signs of autumn are appearing on the nursery there are a few delights which make it bearable to say goodbye to the summer. The Malus on the nursery are heaving with fruits and the range of colours is quite something to behold.
Pictured here is Malus Admiration, peppered in tiny 'crabs' this is the perfect tree for any small garden.
We also have available Golden Hornet, Evereste, Red Sentinel, Red Glow, Red Jade, trilobata (new this year) and Profusion.

The return of the A-Z

After a couple of years rest, the A-Z of shrubs has made a come back to Cash & Carry. We have a great range of core shrubs and will introduce a selection of our newer lines as they become available. We are now half way through bringing an A-Z of perennials up to C&C with grasses to follow at the end of September. The plants are all labelled and barcoded making trade sales much quicker and more efficient. We are always thankful for comments and feedback so please get in touch if you have any further suggestions on how we can improve our service.

Anemones

The summer herbaceous border just wouldn't be complete without the addition of the wonderful Anemone. This is one of my favourite plants at this time of year due to its bold flowerheads held aloft dense lush foliage.
Anemones come in many forms and here on the nursery, we mainly stock Anemone x hybrida varieties. As a rule, these are vigourous, erect, woody-based perennials with palmate, toothed mid green leaves. Plants grow from 1.2m to 1.5m in height with an indefinate spread. Plant in moist, fertile, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade.

Gorgeous Penstemons

We have grown a fabulous range of 1.5L perennials this year at a very reasonable price.

One of the highlights of this range is the Penstemons. Pictured here are a few of the 'Volcano' series which have beautiful bi-coloured flowers in a stunning range of colours.

These Penstemons enjoy a sunny spot in moist but well drained fertile soil and all grow to about 60-70cm tall.

Crocosmia Lucifer

I couldn't get through July without bringing your attention to a favourite of mine, the Crocosmia.

Pictured here is Lucifer with its tomato red arching flower spikes. Crocosmia is a fully hardy robust cormous perennial that will thrive in full sun or partial shade. It prefers fertile, moist but well drained soil and grows up to 1.2 meters.
Other varieties we have in stock are:
Krakatoa 2L - firey orange/red flowers , H:1m S:50cm
George Davidson 2L - lemon yellow flowers, H:60-70cm S:80cm
Golden Ballerina 2L - large orange flowers, H:70cm S:60cm

It's a Knockout!

I'd just like to draw your attention to this gorgeous plant Dahlia Knockout.

This attractive perennial with deep mahogany - black foliage bears bright yellow, ribbed flowers with an orange centre from mid to late summer. It requires full sun and well drained moist but fertile soil. Height: 50cm. Spread: 40cm.

Its worth finding a spot in the garden for this little gem!!

Pictured here are Gaura Passionate Blush in the foreground with Gaillardia Fanfare behind it. These are fabulous potfuls with lush foliage and strong roots, bud and flower to follow in a few weeks.

Agapanthus Streamline 2L - Up to 10 flowerbuds on each plant (then less as orders go out!!)

Verbascum Raspberry Ripple 2L - Tightly budded flowerspikes opening to creamy pink flowers with darker pink stripes.

Lychinis Jenny 2L - Elegant upright flowerspikes, nicely budded opening to gorgeous pink flowers.

Stewarts Cash & Carry at GAN Trade Show

It's that time of year again and the GAN trade show is coming up on Wednesday 13th February 2008. Stewarts will have a stand as usual and this year it will be entirely geared toward advertising and promoting our versatile Cash & Carry.

We will be displaying a selection of specimens from around the nursery as well as plenty of literature of the plants on offer throughout the season. The stand will be manned by our friendly and well informed staff who will be on hand to answer any questions and offer advice about our services.

The Cash & Carry has grown from strength to strength over the last few years and we are very proud of the service and quality of plants that are on offer. Our nursery grows a superb range of top quality hardy stock from 2L- 20L including trees, bamboos, clematis, shrubs and perennials. We have established long standing relationships with suppliers all over Europe for large specimens and Mediterranean palms and olives and we also have tree ferns all the way from New Zealand.
